VERBS

Verbs are one of the basic parts of speech in English grammar. A verb is a word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of being. Verbs are often described as "doing" or "action" words because they describe an action that someone or something is performing. However, not all verbs necessarily describe a physical action - some verbs can describe a mental action, state of being, or an occurrence. Examples of verbs include "run," "sing," "think," "is," and "appear."

Note: Verb forms may vary depending on the subject and verb tense, such as adding -s or -es to the base form in the third person singular present tense (e.g. He plays tennis) or changing the past participle form for irregular verbs (e.g. swim-swam-swum).

15 SAMPLE QUESTIONS

1. The cat ________ on the windowsill.
a) jumped
b) laughed
c) whispered
d) sang

Answer: a) jumped
Explanation: The sentence describes the location of the cat, and the word "on" indicates a position that suggests that the cat moved to that position. The verb "jumped" accurately describes the action of a cat moving onto a windowsill. The other options do not fit the sentence context. "Laughed" and "whispered" are actions that are unlikely for a cat, and "sang" does not fit the context of the sentence.

2. She ________ for the first time in weeks after recovering from her illness.
a) smiled
b) slept
c) danced
d) cried

Answer: a) smiled
Explanation: The sentence describes the action of a person who has recovered from an illness, and the word "for the first time in weeks" suggests that the action is a positive one. The verb "smiled" accurately describes the action of someone feeling better after being ill, and the positive emotion associated with it. The other options do not fit the sentence context. "Slept" is an action that may not be associated with a feeling of recovery, "danced" is also unlikely for someone who has been ill for weeks, and "cried" is not a positive action associated with recovery from an illness.

3. The sun ________ behind the clouds as the storm approached.
a) shone

d) cried

Answer: a) shone
Explanation: The sentence describes the action of the sun and the context is a storm approaching. The verb "shone" accurately describes the action of the sun appearing from behind the clouds before the storm. The other options do not fit the sentence context. "Whispered" and "cried" are actions associated with humans and not with the sun or weather, and "cooked" is not relevant to the context.

4. He ________ a story about his travels in Europe.
a) tell
b) said
c) say
d) told

Answer: d) told
Explanation: The sentence describes the action of someone sharing a story, and the verb "told" accurately describes the action of telling a story. The other options are not correct. "Tell" and "say" are both infinitive forms of the verb, and do not fit grammatically in this sentence. "Said" is the past tense of "say," but it is not correct in this context because it does not accurately convey the action of telling a story.

5. The children ________ outside in the park.
a) slept
b) ran
c) read
d) gone

Answer: b) ran
Explanation: The sentence describes the action of children in the park, and the verb "ran" accurately describes the action of physically moving around in the park. c) went
d) tasted

Answer: d) tasted

Explanation: The sentence is describing the method of transportation that he uses to go to work, and the verb "rode" accurately describes the action of using a bike to travel. c) crying
d) sleeping

Answer: b) cried
Explanation: The sentence is describing the action of the baby during the night, and the verb "cried" accurately describes the sound that a baby makes when they are upset or uncomfortable. The other options do not fit the sentence context. "Whisper" is a soft speaking voice and does not describe the sound that a baby makes. "Crying" is a present participle form of the verb and is not the correct verb form for the sentence. "Sleeping" is not the correct verb to describe the action of a baby when they are crying.

11. The students ____________ their exams last week.
a) took
b) read
c) take
d) run

Answer: a) took
Explanation: The sentence is referring to an action that was completed in the past and the verb "took" accurately describes the action of the students completing their exams. The other options do not fit the sentence context. "Read" does not accurately describe the action of the students completing their exams, as reading is only one part of the exam-taking process. "Take" is the infinitive form of the verb and does not accurately describe an action that has already occurred. "Run" does not fit the context of the sentence, as it is not related to the action of taking an exam.

12. She ____________ the book for hours.
a) reading
b) is read
c) read
d) was played

13. He ____________ the guitar beautifully at the concert.
a) is played
b) playing
c) played
d) plays

Answer: c) played
Explanation: The word "He" is the subject of the sentence, and the sentence is in the past tense. The verb "played" is the best fit because it is in past tense and it accurately describes the action that the person did in the past. The other options do not fit the sentence context. "Is played" and "playing" is present tense and do not match the tense of the sentence, and "plays" is not past tense, which is required by the sentence context.

14. The cat ____________ with a toy mouse.
a) sang
b) ran
c) danced
d) played

Answer: d) played
Explanation: The word "cat" is the subject of the sentence, and the context of the sentence suggests that the cat is engaged in an activity. The verb "played" is the best fit because it describes an action that is appropriate for a cat interacting with a toy mouse. The other options do not fit the sentence context. "Sang" is not a likely verb for a cat with a toy mouse, "ran" is also unlikely in this context, and "danced" does not match the activity of a cat playing with a toy mouse.

15. The storm ____________ for hours, causing a lot of damage.
a) was raining
b) is rained
c) rained
d) raining

Answer: c) rained
Explanation: The word "storm" is the subject of the sentence, and it is past tense, so the verb that follows must also be in past tense. The verb "rained" is in past tense, and it accurately describes the action of the storm over a period of time, which caused a lot of damage. The other options do not fit the sentence correctly. "Was raining" is the past continuous tense, but it doesn't convey the duration of the storm. "Is rained" is present tense, which is incorrect for a past-tense sentence. "Raining" is present participle, which again does not match the tense of the sentence.
